WDS Components pride ourselves with trail blazing in engineering solutions, here are some case studies of our custom work.
Project: Robust Fastener
Brief: A fastener was needed to be used by the aerospace industry to be used in particularly harsh environments. The specification of the finish needed to be consistent.
Solution provided: A variant of the standard quarter turn fastener manufactured by WDS in the UK. The standard chemically blacked finish was changed to be a DIN standard Zinc Plating.
Project: Lanyard Retained Hand Knob
Brief: A hand knob was needed to be used in an air vehicle to secure a panel in place. The hand knob had to be tied in some way to the aircraft to prevent loss. The finished assembly needed to be captive – meaning the lanyard could not be removed in any way. A specific ending was needed to accommodate the mating part.
Solution provided: A WDS standard lanyard was modified along with a custom pressed stainless-steel tab and applied to the type of hand knob desired by the customer.
Project: Precision Detent Pin
Brief: A tight fitted pin was needed to locate in a shaft connecting to a panel. The pin also needed to be removable easily for adjustment of the assembly.
Solution provided: A highly tolerance detent pin was designed with a custom shank length to suit a specific work piece accurately with the location balls higher up than the standard product. The head style added to the aesthetic of the component.
Project: Custom 360° Working Holding Clamp
Brief: A fixture to hold a work piece that can be rotated and locked 360°. The fittings needed to work with the existing hole centres on the workpiece.
Solution provided: A custom ball was manufactured and added to a standard WDS Hydraclamp. The clamp was also painted yellow to match the colours on the existing assembly line.
