What is a gas strut?

A gas strut, or gas spring, is a mechanical component used to achieve controlled motion. It encompasses a sealed cylinder filled with compressed gas and a piston. Manipulating the piston introduces compression to the gas, creating resistance that regulates the movement.

What applications are gas struts typically used for?

Gas struts serve a multitude of functions across various sectors. In the automotive industry, they play a crucial role in facilitating smooth lifting and dependable support for hoods, tailgates, and bonnets. Their adaptability extends to furniture applications, allowing for ergonomic and adjustable features in chairs, beds, and cabinets. In residential spaces, gas struts enhance windows, homemade bars, and shelving units, introducing efficient open-close mechanisms. In industrial environments, these struts are essential for controlling the movement of heavy machinery, emphasizing precision and safety. Additionally, they have a significant presence in aerospace applications, contributing to controlled openings and closures of doors, panels, and compartments.

What does the adjustable force mean?

All WDS gas struts are force adjustable. Every strut is supplied at the maximum force, this is stated in the product data table and printed on the side of the gas strut unit. Using the Allen key supplied, the gas can be let out - reducing the force outputted by the strut. Please note that once the gas has been removed from the cylinder it cannot be added back in, WDS do not offer a refilling service.

Tips for Setting

It is recommended when letting the gas out, to do this in 1 second bursts to not let too much gas out at a time. If more than one strut is being used on the application then struts need to be set equally, alternating between the struts so they are always set to the same force. To aid with setting these perfectly, we suggest adding an extra 10% to the load the gas strut is lifting then start adjusting. As soon as the load is just supported, remove this additional weight and then the hatch/load will be supported perfectly. When fitting, take note of the arrow on the side of the strut for the correct orientation.

End Fittings

These gas struts are supplied with no end fittings as standard and have just threads at either end. The thread size can be found in the product data table; each thread is standard ISO metric coarse pitch. If end fittings are needed, we offer various kits of our gas struts with end fittings, as well as offering the end fittings separately. Clevis forks, clevis eyes, rose joints, eyelets and various brackets are all available from WDS if required.
