How does square broaching work?
Square push broaches are cutting tools used for creating square-shaped holes or slots in workpieces. They are commonly used in machining operations to produce precise square holes for various applications. The process of using square push broaches involves several steps:
- Preparation: The workpiece is securely fixed in a vice or fixture to prevent movement during the broaching process. This is not always necessary, it depends on the part geometry.
- Broach Selection: The appropriate square push broach is selected based on the desired hole size and depth. Broaches come in various sizes and types to accommodate different requirements.
- Pilot Hole: A pilot hole is often drilled into the workpiece before broaching. This hole guides the broach and ensures proper alignment during the cutting process.
- Broaching: The square push broach is inserted into the pilot hole and aligned with the workpiece. A press or other suitable machinery is used to apply axial force to the broach. As the broach is pushed through the workpiece, its cutting teeth gradually remove material to form the square hole. If a form A square is being cut, a second stage broach will need to be used after. If a type B square is being cut, only the first pass is necessary.
- Coolant and Lubrication: Coolants or lubricants may be applied during the broaching process to reduce friction and heat, improving the tool life and surface finish of the workpiece.
- Completion: Once the broach has passed completely through the workpiece, the square hole is formed. The workpiece is then removed from the fixture, and any excess material or burrs are carefully removed.
Square push broaches are used in industries like metalworking, manufacturing, and fabrication, where precise square holes are required for various components and parts. Which broach do I need for my application?
WDS offer two types of square broaching, form A and form B.
Form A
Form A is a full square form, cut using two stages of broaches. For this, the pilot hole needs to be the same size as the square, for example if a 4mm square is required, the pilot hole should be 4mm diameter.
Form B
Form B is a square form that is mostly the bore shape, with the corners cut out to form a partial square, this can be done with just a singular broach instead of a pair (just one pass not two). This is done with a slightly larger pilot
