What are R Clips in 316 Stainless Steel?
Stainless steel 316 R clips are corrosion-resistant retaining fasteners used to secure clevis pins, shafts, axles, and pivot pins in mechanical assemblies. The clip is inserted through a cross-drilled hole in a shaft or pin; the curved spring section grips the outside diameter to prevent the retained component from moving axially during operation. The design allows quick installation and removal without tools, making it suitable for assemblies that require regular maintenance or adjustment.
Manufactured from AISI 316 (A4) stainless steel, these marine grade clips are suitable for marine, outdoor, and corrosive environments where components are exposed to salt spray, humidity, or harsh weather conditions. The clips are manufactured from formed stainless steel spring wire, providing reliable retention while allowing repeated installation and removal.
R clips are widely used with clevis pins and pivot pins in linkage systems, shaft assemblies, and adjustable mechanical components. In engineering terminology they are also commonly referred to as beta pins, particularly within agricultural machinery, trailer equipment, and general mechanical engineering applications where removable pin retention is required.
Marine Applications
The corrosion resistance of 316 stainless steel R clips makes them suitable for marine equipment where components must remain serviceable despite continuous exposure to salt spray, humidity, or occasional immersion.
Typical marine applications include:
- Securing clevis pins in steering and rudder linkage assemblies
- Retaining pins used in deck hardware and removable fittings
- Locking connections in bimini frames, canopy supports, and rail fittings
- Securing hinge pins on hatches, inspection covers, and access panels
- Retaining removable fittings within boat trailer mechanisms and launching equipment
- Securing adjustable components in marine rigging and structural frame assemblies
Because these retaining clips can be installed and removed repeatedly without deformation, they are widely used in marine maintenance operations where fast access to mechanical components is required.
Typical Applications
Stainless steel R clips are commonly used to retain:
- Clevis pins in linkage assemblies
- Pivot pins in machinery and equipment
- Axle and shaft pins in mechanical assemblies
- Trailer and towing equipment components
- Adjustable mechanical linkages
These retaining clips are commonly used in marine equipment, agricultural machinery, trailer assemblies, and industrial machinery where removable pin retention is required.
