Comprehensive Guide to Gas Struts

What is a Gas Strut?

Gas struts are a reliable, versatile hydro-pneumatic solution that supplies support to various door configurations, they are a type of spring that relies on elastic deformation, using compressed gas contained within an enclosed cylinder sealed by a sliding piston to pneumatically store potential energy and withstand external force applied parallel to the direction of the piston shaft.

A Gas Strut is made from a piston, a tight-fitted tube, a precision rod mechanism, pressurized gas (usually nitrogen), and a minute quantity of pressurized lubricant (usually oil), all contained within a sealed cylinder.

Their Force (F) is equal to the pressure differential (P) between internal and external (environment) pressures, acting on the cross-sectional area of the rod (A).

Available Gas Struts

WDS’ gas strut range comprises a wide variety of end fittings, allowing you to securely and safely mount to your ideal placement from a range of angles to absolute precision, complemented by our range of robust materials that allow our gas struts to expand into multiple industries. These include gas struts with

  • no end fittings
  • angle joints
  • Clevis fork
  • Clevis Eye
  • swivel eye
  • swivel eye rose joints
  • external bracket
  • internal bracket
  • flat bracket

Rod Ends & Fittings

Rod Ends & End Fittings may be applied to many applications from tailgates to machine enclosures. Each end & fitting excel within their unique parameters, i.e. Clevis Fork fixing allows inline mounting as opposed to eye fixtures which allow "offset" mounting. WDS also has kits available for less hassle.
