What is a torque knob?

A torque knob is a hand knob with a torque limiting mechanism, designed to prevent the user from applying too much torque and therefore force by overtightening. The torque-limiting mechanism comprises of sprung loaded ball bearings sitting in conical seats. Once the torque is too high, the ball bearings slip from the sits and the hand knob spins independently from the threaded base.
