What is a captive washer?

A captive washer is a washer that is threaded rather than plain and is designed to work alongside captive fasteners such as captive socket screws (WDS 899) and captive thumb screws (WDS 817/8917). Threading the washer onto the fastener allows it to remain attached on to the screw unlike a conventional plain washer.
