What is a gas strut?
A gas strut, or gas spring, is a mechanical component featuring a sealed cylinder filled with compressed gas and a piston. When external force is applied to the piston, the gas compresses, creating controlled resistance that moderates the motion.
What applications are gas struts typically used for?
Within the automotive sector, they provide essential support for lifting and securing hoods, tailgates, and bonnets. These versatile struts offer adaptable and ergonomic elements for chairs, beds, and cabinets. In household contexts, gas struts are employed to enhance windows, under bed storage, homemade bars, and shelving units delivering user-friendly opening and closing mechanisms. In industrial environments, these struts play a pivotal role in managing the controlled movement of heavy machinery, prioritizing both precision and safety. Furthermore, their significance extends to aerospace applications, where they facilitate the systematic opening and closing of doors, panels, and compartments.
What does the adjustable force mean?
All WDS gas struts are force adjustable. Every strut is supplied at the maximum force, this is stated in the product data table and printed on the side of the gas strut unit. Using the Allen key supplied, the gas can be let out - reducing the force output by the strut. Please note that once the gas has been removed from the cylinder it cannot be added back in. WDS do not offer a refilling service.
What is the advantage of quick release fittings vs the standard fittings?
The main difference between quick release and standard angle joint fittings lies in how they are secured and removed. Standard angle joints are more secure but harder to remove, as they are held in place with an outer clip and an inner circlip, requiring force to detach the ball joint. In contrast, quick release fittings use a spring-loaded housing that easily slides back, allowing the ball joint to be quickly disconnected. Quick release joints are ideal for applications where gas struts may need to be removed for maintenance, offering convenience and speed, but they may not be as secure as standard fittings for long-term, fixed use.
Tips for Setting
It is recommended when letting the gas out, to do this in 1 second bursts and to not let too much gas out at a time. If more than one strut is being used on an application, then struts need to be set equally, alternating between the struts so they are always set to the same force. To aid with setting these perfectly, we suggest adding an extra 10% to the load the gas strut is lifting then start adjusting. As soon as the load is just supported, remove this additional weight and then the hatch/load will be supported perfectly. When fitting, take note of the arrow on the side of the strut for the correct orientation.
End Fittings
Two end fittings are supplied with each of these gas struts. These are 90 degree angle joints in zinc plated steel. The ball can be removed from the socket of the joint by simply pulling back on the sleeve of the housing and removing the ball socket. This housing sleeve is spring loaded, meaning it will spring back to the closed position.
Materials
Steel is a highly versatile and durable material that offers numerous benefits in various industries. One of the key advantages of steel is its exceptional strength, making it suitable for applications requiring structural integrity, such as in construction and engineering projects. Moreover, steel is known for its excellent corrosion resistance, allowing it to withstand harsh environments and maintain its integrity over time. Additionally, steel is a sustainable choice as it is 100% recyclable, reducing the need for new production and minimizing environmental impact. The versatility of steel is evident in its ability to be fabricated into different shapes and sizes, enabling its use in a wide range of applications. Whether it's used in automotive manufacturing, infrastructure development, or everyday household items, steel's reliability and durability make it an ideal material choice.
