What is a heavy duty gas spring?

A heavy duty gas spring, or heavy duty gas strut, is a controlled motion component comprised of a cylinder filled with compressed gas and a piston. The movement of the piston initiates compression in the gas, resulting in controlled resistance that regulates the motion. Heavy duty means that the gas spring has a greater force range than our standard gas springs this means it can support more weight.

What applications are gas springs typically used for?

Gas springs have a versatile range of uses across various sectors. In the automotive industry, they aid in the smooth lifting and support of hoods, tailgates, and bonnets. They also find utility in furniture applications, enabling ergonomic and adjustable features in chairs, beds, and cabinets. Around homes, they enhance windows, homemade bars, and shelving units, offering convenient open-close mechanisms. In industrial settings, gas springs assist in controlling the movement of heavy machinery, ensuring precision and safety. Moreover, they have a significant presence in aerospace applications, contributing to controlled openings and closures of doors, panels, and compartments.

What does the adjustable force mean?

All WDS gas springs are force adjustable. Every spring is supplied at the maximum force, this is stated in the product data table and printed on the side of the gas spring unit. Using the Allen key supplied, the gas can be let out - reducing the force outputted by the spring. Please note that once the gas has been removed from the cylinder it cannot be added back in. WDS do not offer a refilling service.

Tips for Setting

It is recommended when letting the gas out, to do this in 1 second bursts to not let too much gas out at a time. If more than one spring is being used on the application then springs need to be set equally, alternating between the springs so they are always set to the same force. To aid with setting these perfectly, we suggest adding an extra 10% to the load the gas spring is lifting then start adjusting. As soon as the load is just supported, remove this additional weight and then the hatch/load will be supported perfectly. When fitting, take note of the arrow on the side of the spring for the correct orientation.
