What is a gas strut?

A gas strut, or gas spring, is a mechanical aid designed for controlled motion. It features a sealed cylinder filled with compressed gas and a piston. By manipulating the piston, the gas compresses, generating resistance that guides the movement.

What applications are gas struts typically used for?

Gas struts offer a wide spectrum of applications across diverse industries. In the automotive realm, they play a critical role in lifting and supporting hoods, tailgates, and bonnets smoothly. Their adaptability extends to furniture applications, enabling user-friendly adjustable features in chairs, beds, and cabinets. At home, gas struts are integrated into windows, DIY bars, and shelving units to provide seamless open-close mechanisms. In industrial settings, gas struts assist in controlling the movement of heavy machinery, ensuring precision and safety. Additionally, they contribute significantly to aerospace functions by facilitating controlled openings and closures of doors, panels, and compartments.

What does the adjustable force mean?

All WDS gas struts are force adjustable. Every strut is supplied at the maximum force, this is stated in the product data table and printed on the side of the gas strut unit. Using the Allen key supplied, the gas can be let out - reducing the force outputted by the strut. Please note that once the gas has been removed from the cylinder it cannot be added back in, WDS do not offer a refilling service.

Tips for Setting

It is recommended when letting the gas out, to do this in 1 second bursts to not let too much gas out at a time. If more than one strut is being used on the application then struts need to be set equally, alternating between the struts so they are always set to the same force. To aid with setting these perfectly, we suggest adding an extra 10% to the load the gas strut is lifting then start adjusting. As soon as the load is just supported, remove this additional weight and then the hatch/load will be supported perfectly. When fitting, take note of the arrow on the side of the strut for the correct orientation.
